For this project, I was tasked with coming up with a logo for the podcasting company Gimlet Media. While researching this company, I found that they make high-quality, narrative podcasts that span different genres. They wish to become the “HBO of podcasting.” I also found that a gimlet is a cocktail drink made from gin and lime.
Before my first critique, I got a couple of sketches of where I generally wanted to go. I wanted to convey that it is a podcasting company and that they are high quality.
During my critique, I was told that the bottom right sketches resembled the LG logo and that I should try to go less literal.
During the next critique, I was told that my strongest sketches were the ones that had the lines coming out of the bottom part of the G as they best represented communication. It was also pointed out that the even weight lines on the wordmark could work well.
After these early critiques, I had a general idea of where to go with it and decided to take it into Illustrator.
I was tasked with implementing 2 of my strongest sketches for the next critique to help narrow down what the final design should look like. I chose the color scheme after going to a lecture on color theory. After learning that blue is popular in business since it translates well in most markets and keeping in mind that they are a growing company, I went with this hue (#28BCEA). During the critique, I was told that the G with the lines coming out of it better demonstrated a theme of communication and had better scalability. I was also told to mess with the kerning on the wordmark so that the last 3 letters are spaced better.
Here is the final design for the logo. I made a logo that is just the G in Gimlet along with a wordmark to use.
